After doing a repair on a windows installation which was corrupted we were getting the following error when trying to go to a website from the address bar of Internet Explorer 6 and also when clicking on the windows update icon on the start menu.

I believe this was occurring because prior to the repair the computer had Internet Explorer 8 and some IE8 settings must have been still hanging around causing problems.
To fix this I was able to download the full version of IE8 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx (or just google for “IE8 download”) using an installation of Firefox on the system and then installing it off of the hard drive. After a reboot I was able to run windows update and browse again.
If you don’t have another browser on the system just download the installation files on another system and copy them over using some sort of external drive.
Some websites say that you can uninstall the previous installation of IE8 or IE7 using the Add/Remove programs but in this case the entry was not in the list. There is also an uninstaller under c:\windows\ie7 or c:\windows\ie8 but the uninstaller failed in this case.
Please note: It is really not a good idea to run Internet explorer as an
administrator as per the instructions below.
Only use the IE session for the Portal and not general
web surfing as you are bypassing ALOT of the security measures in
place helping to protect you from malware/viruses etc. Use these
instructions at your own risk.
Seriously dont do it.
1. Right Click on the Internet Explorer icon and click on the “Run as administrator”

2.
Click on “allow” (not pictured)
3. Login to your portal normally.

4. Click “I accept”

5. Click “My Applications” then on the terminal server link on the portal.

6. On the window that pops up. Single left click on the bar at the top and select “Install ActiveX Control”

7. Click “install”

8. Once again single left click on the bar at the top of the screen and select “Run ActiveX Control”

9. Select “Run”

If it still doesn’t work then you will need to close down the window and click on the terminal server
link again.
InPrivate mode is a special mode of IE 8 where it does not save Cookies, Passwords, Browsing History, URLS typed into the search field or Temporary Internet files.
You can start Internet Explorer easily in “inPrivate” Mode when Internet Explorer is open by clicking on Safety – InPrivate Browsing from the tools menu.

You can also fire up InPrivate mode without the hassle of first opening up a “normal” IE Window by creating a new shortcut with the following location, “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” -private and then using that shortcut to run IE.
To do this right click on your desktop and select New -> Shortcut. In the location button type in “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” -private as shown below.

Now give it a name so you can distinguish it better and click Finish.
